Bright Smiles for Bright Futures

Bright Smiles for Bright Futures is a Dental Aid program for pregnant women.  Bright Smiles is designed to:

  • Improve the oral health status of low-income pregnant women;
  • Contribute to maintaining a healthy pregnancy;
  • Reduce transmission of cavity-causing organisms from mother to child; and
  • Change the oral health behaviors of participating families.

Pregnant women eligible for Bright Smiles for Bright Futures are referred, either formally or informally, by community health centers and other prenatal care providers or human services organizations. Each woman who is referred is contacted by our bilingual/bicultural Dental Aid case manager, who meets with the woman and her family, provides initial program and oral health education, and acts as a patient navigator to assure that they are able to make appointments with Dental Aid and are appropriately referred to other human service organizations, if needed. Women who are enrolled in Bright Smiles are provided with free emergency dental care, preventive dental care (cleanings, x-rays and education), and necessary periodontal care to eliminate infection in the gum tissue. If a woman needs restorative treatment Dental Aid will provide up to $150 in subsidization for restorative care utilizing Bright Smiles funding. If more subsidization of treatment is needed, we will leverage other program funding, if available.
